When Less Is More

Years ago, in a now defunct Borders store I came across two books that partially shared the titles:

  1. Christa Brelin (Editor), Strength in Numbers: A Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Resource, Visible Ink Pr, 1996
  2. Sherman K. Stein, Strength in Numbers: Discovering the Joy and Power of Mathematics in Everyday Life, Wiley, 1996

The incongruous semantics difference between the two titles was hugely amazing. I made a reference to the two books to foster my argument in a discussion with R. Hersh that ambiguity is not only inherent in mathematics but even more so in the common language.

Since then the nearby Borders store has disappeared, likely squeezed out by online competitors. Be as it may, one no longer has to rely on luck to find a suitable reference in a neighborhood store. The search at amazon.com for "Strength in Numbers" yielded several pages long list of books - admittedly not all relevant. But here are the first few:

It's a pleasure to observe that Sherman Stein's book is still selling well.

Here are a few results from the search for "When Less is More" which I mistakenly ran looking for P. Nahin's "When Least is Best."
