Wisdom from a WWII Chess Book

In an odd sort of events I came across a quote from an old Russian chess book. The author instructed his readers to place the rook behind a pawn, as long as it was a correct move. Wisdom to live by.

I was reading City of Thieves by David Benioff - an American writer, a book about the 2.5 years siege of Leningrad by the Germans during the WWII. The book highlights the aspects of the life in the Soviet Union that are customarily glossed over in the Russian literature. To acquire a sense of authencity, I highly recommend a memoir A Mountain of Crumbs by the Russian born Elena Gorokhova.
