Your age and chocolate eating habits
I just received an email from an Israeli friend who forwarded me an email from a friend of his with the subject line "It works, too."
The original email was about determining one's age, given the number of times one feels an urge to enjoy chocolate over any particular week. The recipe assume that the weekly number of urges is rather moderate, viz., between 0 and 10, i.e., expressed as a single digit. However, a little experimentation or simple reasioning show that it will work even in rather chocolate addiction cases.
The recipe is simple (but you may need a calculator to better enjoy the experience):
- Double the number of your weekly urges.
- Add 5 to the result.
- Multiply this by 50.
- Depeding on whether you are past your this year's birthday or not yet, add to the result 1760 or 1759.
- Subtract the year of your birth.
That's it. Pay attention to the last two digits of the final number. These must give you your current age. The number obtained by erasing the last two digits is exactly the number of your weekly "chocolate" urges.
The original email ends with an observation that the algorithm won't work except for the year 2010. However, it could be modified to work for any year - food for thought.
